As Jury Deliberates, Jerry Sandusky's Adopted Son Makes Shocking AllegationMonica Bielanko
A bombshell dropped in the Jerry Sandusky abuse case currently unfolding in a small Pennsylvania town.
As Dan Wetzel from Yahoo Sports reports, as the case went to the jury Thursday afternoon, everyone was rocked by a late-breaking allegation from Jerry Sandusky’s son, of all people.
Matt Sandusky, 33, was Jerry and Dottie Sandusky’s foster child and was later adopted as an adult. He released a statement through his attorney saying the trial made him recall memories of being abused by the former Penn State defensive coordinator.
As Wetzel reports, “Matt had become so convinced of his own abuse that he called prosecutors earlier this week and expressed a willingness to testify against his father. He’d started the trial on the defense witness list.”
Matt’s attorney tells the Harrisburg Patriot-News, “This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy. There will be no further comment.”
So what happens now? Well, we wait for the jury who cannot take these new claims into account to make their decision. Had the special deputy attorney general decided to call Matt Sandusky as a witness for the prosecution, he risked the defense being able to call for a continuance, which probably would have delayed the trial for months and prompted the reseating of a new jury and a new trial. Because Matt Sandusky wasn’t included in the original indictment, he can’t be a prosecution witness without the defense arguing they need more time to prepare.
Why go through all that trouble when the state feels like they already have a rock solid case? Sandusky already faces 48 counts for abusing 10 boys over a 15 year period. If convicted, he faces a sentence of as much as 40 years in prison.
None of the Sandusky children testified for the defense. But during closing arguments yesterday, Jerry’s wife Dottie was joined by three of the family’s five adopted sons and their only adopted daughter. Matt was not there. He was brought up during the trial, though. As Wetzel reports on Yahoo, “victim No. 4 detailed a story where Matt saw the then-boy and Jerry Sandusky enter a shower together. Victim 4 said Matt gave a strange look. Previously Matt’s biological mother testified before a grand jury that she feared strange behavior between Jerry and Matt.”
Late last night, after six hours of deliberation, the jury asked to review the testimony of former Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary. He’s the coach who claims he walked in on Sandusky molesting a boy in the locker room shower. The jury also wanted to review testimony from a friend of the McQueary family to whom Mike detailed what he saw on the night of the event.
The jury, made up of 7 women and 5 men who have been sequestered during deliberations and have no knowledge of Matt Sandusky’s allegations, resumed deliberations this morning. Strollerderby will bring you the latest in this developing story as it unfolds.
