Babble Book Review: Rocket's Learning Box

rocket's learning box

Rocket's Learning Box is full of wonder.

My 6-year-old daughter loves writing stories. She’s been working on a four-part series of late starring “The Chicken” who is always getting into trouble, be it during karate class or by falling into a pit of M&M’s. For a while there she was even convinced that she was going to grow up to be a writer and illustrator of children’s books. (Not a bad goal!) So when I was given a copy of Rocket’s Learning Box, which includes “How Rocket Learned to Read” and “Rocket Writes a Story,” I thought my daughter might like it. She didn’t like it — she loved it! (Her favorite expression these days. Ha.)

Author-illustrator Tad Hills does a great job creating sweet, sympathetic characters in these books, reminiscent of Snoopy and Woodstock of Peanuts (aka Charlie Brown) fame. There’s an almost zen quality to these books that I think parents will love, because even though they’re geared toward teaching the basics of reading and writing, they’re also perfect bedtime stories. Here are some scenes from “Rocket Writes a Story,” below. The box set would make a great holiday gift for a child under 8, and is a steal on Amazon at $23.75 for two hardcover books that come with a cute poster. (My daughter loves hanging things that are just for kids in her room.)
