Baby Who Started it All to Make 'What to Expect' Author a GrandmotherMadeline Holler
The baby who inspired What to Expect When You’re Expecting author Heidi Murkoff to start dispensing advice on how to get through a pregnancy is, well, expecting.
And as you might expect, she’s joining the WTEWYE crew.
Murkoff announced the pregnancy on her What to Expect website in a post titled “What to Expect When Emma’s Expecting.” Awww.
Like many women, I have much hostility toward Murkoff’s baby books empire. I think her advice, while in parts reassuring (OK if you went on a bender before you realized you were pregnant, e.g.), is generally outdated, sexist and kind of infantilizing toward women.
Most awful is the Best Odds Diet which, at least in the edition I had a decade ago, took all the fat, sugar and flavor out of eating to survive, much less for two. I think my weakest moment as a pre-mom was buying a jar of wheat germ, per Murkoff’s Best Odds advice, and sprinkling it on food (only happened once, just before I threw the book across the room).
But back to Emma. She’s expecting! And she’s going to carry on the family habit of dispensing advice to pregnant women, expectant fathers and anyone else who falls in the ever-widening target audience of her What to Expect media empire (which includes a box-office flop by the same name).

I am so honored to join all of you mamas and mamas-to-be in the What To Expect family. I feel like I am becoming a member of a really special sorority, but instead of frat parties, there’s nausea, vomiting, gas, and heartburn… so in reality, it actually is kind of the same thing.
I’m here to hold your hand — and have you hold mine — while we all experience this miraculous, terrifying time in our lives called pregnancy. There will be laughs, tears, and constipation….but happily, miserable pregnancy symptoms love company, and we’re all in this together. Friend-to-friend, bump-to-bump.
Big fist bumps to Emma, who is due in February. And you know, a little wheat germ might help with that constipation.
