It's Ho-Ho-Holiday Gift Guide Time!

It’s that time of year again… In a matter of days, every which way you turn, bloggers will be announcing their Holiday Gift Guides and you will either love these posts or hate ‘em.   If you’re a blogger yourself, I’m sure that the media pitches started rolling in in early September:

Dear {Blogger}: I wanted to share with you this new and awesome product that just hit stores in case you are working on your holiday gift guide? Please let me know if you’d like more information or high-res images. [Insert press release here]

For those of us mom-preneurs who are product sellers, the holiday gift guide circuit is an extremely valuable opportunity to promote our products to a receptive market.  To others, the holiday gift guides provide great content for our blogs and, Blogging 101 has taught us that doing product giveaways on your blog is a surefire way to encourage a spike in traffic to your site.  And, still, others tend to not take the holiday gift guides too seriously, but we have fun creating them and reading them anyway.

I fall in the latter category.

I started my holiday gift guide in 2008 when I was writing on Mamalaw.com because of all the pitches I was getting for random products.  A lightbulb went off and I decided that, instead of accepting the random product sample that wasn’t of interest to me, I would ask select PR firms to send the review sample of a product I actually liked directly to one of my readers.   Goodness knows I didn’t need anymore free stuff.  And so my Holiday Gift Guide and Giveaway Event was born.

It was a hit with my readers (if not a lot of work for me) and it was a win-win-win: I had holiday content and interesting giveaways on my site and the company got the mentions it wanted and my readers got to win cool stuff.  Now in year 4, I can say that I really do enjoy doing them and am gearing up to announce this year’s on Life IS the Party after the Thanksgiving holiday.  After all, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

How do you feel about blogger-hosted Holiday Gift Guides?
