One Haverford, PA student was getting to school the old-fashioned way: on horseback. Roby Burch has been riding his horse to and from school all year, keeping the animal corralled on the private schools grounds during class time.
He’s given it up since his horse, Jet, hurt his hoof on the pavement making the commute through suburban Haverford. The teenager is looking forward to getting his driver’s license in February.
After all the kerfuffle’s about letting kids walk or bike to school, it’s kind of awesome to read about such a creative commuter.
Leaving aside for the moment all the obvious class issues (these people have several horses, which they let their kids ride to the tony private school nearby, clearly they’re not like the
Cars taking kids to school actually make up a huge percentage of morning traffic. Walking or biking is not only better for your health and your kids, it helps the planet big time. On top of that, it connects you with your neighborhood.
Obviously, we’re not all going to start riding horses to school anytime soon. But we might think about other creative ways to get form here to there. Have you found an alternative to driving that works for your family?
