Breastfeeding Baby Ad Bothers Ohio Residents

6a00d8341c51c053ef01347ff749d8970c-450wi“Breastmilk satisfies” reads a new ad from the Ohio Department of Health, encouraging moms to consider breastfeeding their new babies — like the cute, chubby-cheeked kid in the ad.  Sounds harmless, right?

That’s until you notice the (GASP) breastmilk — milk that came from a woman’s breast — dribbling down his chin.  And suddenly, someone’s complaining.

When Fox Toledo interviewed people to see how they felt about the new signs, many were positive.  But Toledo resident Stephanie Swan found the whole thing, well, gross:

“When I first saw it I thought, you know, I agree with breast milk, it’s fine but then I saw it with the milk around its mouth and I though that was so unappealing. The baby’s cute, but I did not like the milk coming out of his mouth” said Swan.

Though most commenters on Fox Toledo disagreed with Swan, some where equally disgusted.  “I had a bad reaction when I saw that billboard in my town, too,” wrote one.  “It’s not the fact that it’s about breastfeeding, it the design itself that seems sexualized.”

Another wishes the Ohio Department of Health would clean up its act:  “Kids with messy faces are gross, not cute. I want to wipe the faces of the kids and adults in all those ads.”

She makes a good point:  No one complained when Rebecca Romijn showed up in magazines spouting a cow’s milk moustache.  I mean, people do realize that milk comes from a cow, right?  Margaret Hartmann at Jezebel writes:

But what’s so disgusting about a little milk dribble? Everyone loves “Got Milk” ads, but the liquid in those ads comes from a cow’s udder, not a woman’s nipple. Plenty of baby food ads show kids with food smeared all over their faces, so why is being coated in mushy peas cute while breast milk is “unappealing”?

Tell us what you think?  Is there a problem with this ad, or are people just looking for a reason to complain?
