Just when we thought the Palin family circus couldn’t get more tawdry, Bristol Palin and Levi Johnson have announced their intentions to get married on live TV.
They’re also shopping “several” reality show concepts around Hollywood. Their plan: do a reality show about “parenting issues”. You think these two might know something about that?
Now, in their defense, these kids have barely dipped their toes into the waters of adulthood. They can’t be expected to exercise solid judgment, let alone tact, when it comes to knowing what they should or should not do on national television.
But where are their parents? Oh, right. Making a spectacle of themselves on TV.
Bristol actually seems, on occasion, to have the makings of a classy lady and a good mom. This reunion with Levi is a mystery, but hey, who hasn’t had an on-again, off-again love affair. That sort of tumult is what adolescence is all about.
Most of us have the opportunity to leave those years blessedly buried in yearbooks past. How will Bristol feel in 10 years about having her awkward entrance to adulthood still floating around on YouTube?
Maybe not that different from the rest of her Facebook generation. Or from my own kids, whose childhood antics are all on display at my blog. I suspect, though, that difference in scale of public attention a TV show provides will put a lot of pressure on Bristol, Levi and Tripp.
Maybe Bristol should have a long talk with Kate Gosselin before she pursues this any further.
