California Finds Toxin-Free Nail Polishes Full of Toxins

toxin free nail polish

That toxin-free nail polish you picked out the salon may be full of the bad stuff.

First it was toxic lipstick. Now, nail polish.

The California Department of Public Control has issued a new report finding that many salon nail polishes promoted as toxin free actually do contain high levels of substances that can cause birth defects, including toluene.  According to a local NPR story, “18 of 25 nail care products bought in the San Francisco Bay Area contained at least one chemical linked to cancer or reproductive harm.”

It’s scary to think manufacturers might be purposefully mislabeling products as toxin free that are not. The falsely labeled products included Sation 99 base coat and top coat, Dare to Wear nail lacquer and Poshe fast dry base coat, among many others. Employees of nail salons are most at risk, given their constant exposure to such chemicals.

Perhaps it would be better to do your mani-pedi, or your child’s, at home. If you’re looking for nail polishes that are toxin free, try these 12 recommended by Babble’s Toddler Times blog.
