Child Drives Car On Busy China Street While Family Catches it on Video

By Stephanie Precourt |

A child who looks to be about four years old is videotaped while she drives down the street through early morning traffic. And no, there is no adult controlling the wheel or pedals. She has some sort of extension device to reach the breaks and gas.

Part of me is like, um, speechless. And another part of me feels like it would be maybe a good idea? to teach my kids to drive at a young age, just in case? But not like I would EVER let them drive in TRAFFIC or with other cars or people anywhere near and oh yeah, not at age four or five WHAT? Watch for yourself below and let me know what you think.

WHAT the what? I…I don’t have words.

My brothers and I drove tractors when we were five on our farm, especially for haying. We were too small to toss bales up, but we could certainly drive! By seven, we all knew how to drive our pick-up truck. In case of emergency, or a way to get down to the river for a swim. The boys were on motorcycles at eight (I was more interested in my pony). No biggie. I think it’s awesome!

Plenty of young kids drive motorized go carts and midget racers competitively, fast and impressively well. The problem with driving on the public roadway at a young age is not that kids lack the capability. It’s that they don’t have fully developed judgment/restraint/sophistication, and we can’t hold them sufficiently liable for mistakes they may make, either legally or ethically. That, and our cars are hardly designed to be safely controlled by tiny people.
