Comments of the Week: Newsflash — Babies Are Cute!

Babble's Comments of the WeekCongratulations, readers! We did it. We worked five whole consecutive days without pulling out anyone’s hair, screaming curse words at the barista, or giving into the temptation to literally throw the baby out with the bath water. And sure, maybe a few of us had a *minor* emotional breakdown Monday afternoon, ending in yet another can of Gerber splattered across the carpet in an explosion of beets. And maybe some of us spent most of Thursday wondering how exactly such a small child could force a diaper over the babysitter’s head. But what’s important is that we’re here, we made it, and it’s FRIDAY.

Starting today, we’ve got a brand-new feature to look forward to on Fridays: our weekly comments roundup! Truly one of the most rewarding parts of working at Babble is watching our community’s lively, thoughtful conversations unfold. Okay, yes, a few comments can only be described as word-barf (“IM SINGLE AND I LIKE BABIES BECAUSE THEY ARE CUTE”) but such is the nature of the internet. And a smaller chunk can only be described as Chace Crawford fan-fiction erotica, but that’s a whole other can of worms. Still, the intelligent, passionate contributions dominate the conversation and take it to a whole new level.

So without further ado, here are your voices. Voices that make us laugh, voices that make us cry, and, honestly, voices that get us out of bed in the morning.

  • Having another child does not take away from the first. Rather it gives to the first. Yes, they fight, yes they compete against each other in almost anything. But this helps build their character. What I do know is that when they are away from me — at school, for instance — they look out for each other.

  • I adored my MIL she and I were great friends. She’d call and yack with me on the phone and at the end of the conversations she’d say, “Tell old what’s-his-name I said hello!” and I’d just crack up laughing. She’d call me out of the blue every once in a while and say, “I can’t help you today.” That puzzled me for a while until I realized that she was telling me she was available to help me with anything at all every other day of the year. She died a couple of years ago and I still miss her almost every day.

  • I have no family out here and most of my friends abandon me when I got pregnant. I am a stay-at-home-mom for my 4 month old son and his daddy works full time and goes to school, plus we share a car that I get very little use of, so my days are lonely and spent in my house and it gets very lonely, because being a mom is awesome, but of course it is not enough, because I am meant to be a woman, a friend, and so much more. But whenever I get really down, I see my baby smile at me and I just hug him and remember no matter how many friends I could make, none will love me the way my baby loves me.
