Cool New Way To Analyze Your Twitter FollowersCecily Kellogg
A while back my mother a geographer whose PhD dissertation focused on spatial diffusion asked me if there was any way to break down my Twitter followers by location. She was curious about how location impacted my following. At the time there wasn’t a great tool to do that, but that has just changed. The good folks at Schmap a twitter tool that provides “real-time local buzz” is now offering a new service called Know Your Followers.
This information is FASCINATING. Here’s a sampling of what I now know about my followers.
nearly 40% of my followers are male. I would NEVER have guessed that.
the majority of my US followers live in New York and California.
I have more followers in my hometown than any other city.
5% of my followers are musicians.
only .01% of my followers are interested in Justin Bieber (thank GOD).
This is only a small sample of the information I gleaned from my report. You can view the data as a chart (which is what is on the home page) or as a graph:
Or as a map (when it comes to where your followers live). The map is interactive; when I hover over a country, it gives me the specific numbers).
Of course this service isn’t free. A limited report is (up to ten answers per category) which can provide you a solid snapshot of your info (and other peoples, by the way), but there are several different pricing structures ranging from about $40 on up for companies and $5 on up for individuals. Or you can do what I did, refer a couple dozen folks to the service and get my info for free using a provided link.
I think it’s important to know this information about yourself because I can pretty much guarantee that brands will be looking at that same info to see if you will fit the market they are trying to reach. It’s also another tool in your arsenal to use to sell yourself.
So check it out! I highly recommend it. Fun stuff.
