When school is cancelled due to inclement weather most parents receive an email, a phone call or check their school’s website. But Michael Ulku-Steiner, the head of school at Durham Academy in North Carolina, and Lee Hark, the Assistant Head of School, they don’t play that way.
Instead of a simple message, the two were inspired by Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” (and the Olympic Games) and created the coolest snow day announcement, quite possibly ever.
The duo remains stoic as they deadpan their own rendition of the classic rap ditty adding lyrics like “slate falling down like a million missiles, bringing school delays and early dismissals,” and the results are totally awesome. One of them even donned an over-the-top Ralph Lauren Olympic sweater — now that’s commitment!
There is something so wonderful about this, to see educators embracing the silly and doing their best to amuse their students. As one YouTube commenter said, “Now that’s how you do a weather announcement! Nice Nice Baby.” Nice, very nice Durham Academy. I, for one, would welcome more snow days if they were announced like this.
