Every year on March 21, people in 45 countries celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. The date 3/21 was chosen because it represents three copies of the 21 chromosomes, which is unique to people with Down syndrome.
Organizers and supporters of the day hope to showcase the talents and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome, and also celebrate the man who figured out what caused some kids to be born with the specific characteristics of the condition.
This year, organizers also put together a video of children around the world who have Down syndrome.
Down syndrome day isn’t once a year for thousands of families. But for those looking in from the outside, a child with Down syndrome isn’t necessarily the focus of everyday.
Cathleen Sherman blogs that Down syndrome i’s part of their daughter, but it’s not everything. And she has this to tell parents whose lives may soon come to include a child with Down.
To a new parent beginning this journey, to an expectant mom wondering what this might mean in her family, and to all the people who aren’t personally blessed with such an amazing gift such as we have: life is beautiful. Lilly is amazing. We are blessed. We’ve had such an incredible journey and I look forward to such a bright future ahead.
