Do You Hate Sarah Palin Because She Lost Her Baby Weight?

By brettsinger |

Sarah PalinLaura Ingraham on Fox News specifically wanted to know “Are Feminists Jealous of Sarah Palin?” Which is weird. But the discussion on Fox News waded into parenting waters so I wanted to ask our readers: Do you hate Sarah Palin because she lost her baby weight?A brief bit of background: the Washington City Paper has an article saying that Laura Ingraham was filling in for Bill O’Reilly on October 30, 2009, and actually had a segment titled “Are Feminists Jealous of Sarah Palin?” Ingraham’s guests were “Washington Post columnist Sally Quinn and Republican pollster KellyAnne Conway” and City Paper says that the trio “produced some pretty interesting theories” regarding feminist animosity towards Palin. The reasons, which include things like “Todd is cute” are all bizarre — why can’t someone just dislike Palin because of what she says or does? (To be fair, Quinn does say that eventually.) But here’s the baby weight thing:

Theory #3: We hate her because Palin lost weight after having the 5th baby we never had because we were too busy being childless spinster abortionists without cute husbands:

CONWAY: . . . And look, she lost all her baby weight. It makes some women crazy. They’ve got 1.3 children and a Pilates schedule they have to keep, and it makes some of them crazy.

QUINN: . . . Well, let me just say first that she has a point about people being jealous about her losing her baby weight. I have to say.

I wish I were clever enough to make this up but I’m not. (Well, maybe I am. But not this time.)

So, um… “she has a point about people being jealous about her losing her baby weight”? Really? Does anyone actually think that anyone, feminist, not feminist, Martian, whatever, dislikes Palin because she’s physically fit? “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful”? Really?

Ingraham goes on to say, “Admit it right now. Palin is hot. She is pro-life. She shoots. She hunts. She has a big family. And all these feminists are like just seething with jealousy about it.” Riiiight. Because other than, she’s just wonderful.

Conway even posits the notion that this perceived hatred is because Palin “looks so feminine. She acts like a woman, but governed like a man.” What the heck does that even mean? It sounds like a deodorant ad — you know, “strong enough for a man, but made for a woman.”

What’s funny (not ha-ha funny) about this line of thinking is that it is, in my opinion, incredibly insulting to Sarah Palin. Think about it — it’s not possible to dislike her for her political views, or her actions. Just her looks, and her abilities as a wife and mother. You know. Woman stuff.

But back to the question at hand. Do you hate Sarah Palin because she lost her baby weight? (Feel free to weigh in on the “Todd is hot” theory if you like, but I’m not going there.)

Hmmm, I lost my baby weight with both my kids and I have a hot husband…. but yeah I still hate her for being a right wing anti- choice xenophobic gun-nut.

  2. GP says:

I’ll comment when I’m finished laughing my ass off.

  3. Alison says:

I, too, lost my baby weight and have a hot husband (and, for what it is worth, I don’t find Todd Palin attractive). AND I am younger than Sarah Palin and I am a SAHM (the zenith of female achievement in the eyes of Right Wing Conservatives) so, maybe, by the logic of these pundits, Sarah Palin hates me! Woohoo.

I agree it is extremely insulting to Sarah Palin to suggest that she cannot be hated for the ideas she espouses or her behavior. However, I don’t think she minds this defense being waged on her part because it means she doesn’t have to actually engage with her critics on a substantive level. Better to just belittle them, that way, no one will ever be able to prove the emperor has no clothes.

  4. Laure68 says:

So, by that logic, can we assume that all those right-wing men hate Barrack Obama because he is hot?

  5. Ri-chan says:

I don’t hate Sarah Palin because she lost baby weight, or because she’s pretty (which I don’t get, for the record, I’m bi and I don’t find her attractive at all) or because her husbands cute(which I also disagree with). I hate Sarah Palin because I cannot abide stupidity and she is an idiot and a b-ch.

  6. Andrea says:

I knew there was something about her, but I just couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Thanks for helping me clear it up!

  7. cocobean says:

Wow! There are so many things wrong with this that I don’t even know where to start! First of all I hate Sarah Palin because she’s an idiot and I don’t agree with any of her issues! Second of all obviously these people have no idea what a feminist is. A feminist isn’t someone who says that you can only go to work while you have babies. The point of being a feminist is that we as women get to choose what we want to do! It doesn’t matter if you choose to work a 60hr work week or work all the time and be a SAHM!

  8. dianna says:

I can see where people disagree, but how is she an idiot? Is everyone who holds pro-life sentiments an idiot, or is there something specific you think is stupid?
I’ve always found the inclination to call anyone in a prestigious office, Jimmy Carter, or GW Bush, or Sarah Palin “stupid” based on the fact that you disagree—-surely it takes some intellect to run a state like Georgia, Texas or Alaska, and surely smart people can disagree with one another, right?

  9. Alison says:

Dianna, I find her refusal to back up her opinions with facts or substance to be disturbing. Also, she seems to lack an understanding of the constitution and the way in which government works. Finally, in response to her pro-life sentiments, in interviews, she seemed to parrot off talking points, but failed to demonstrate an understanding of what Roe v. Wade actually says or what the legal arguments against the law really are. I have no idea if she is smart or stupid, but she seems more interested in garnering attention and stoking her own celebrity than in the actual issues beyond the soundbites she speaks. Also, getting elected to public office may demonstrate any number of attributes–drive, determination, intelligence, personality, likability–but the fact of one’s election is not proof that one possesses these attributes. How one does in the position may be a better indicator, but she resigned her position as governor before completing one term, so we don’t really have much to go on except her public presentations (her deceptive speeches and her incoherent interviews) which leads me to conclude that she is not the second coming of Ayn Rand.

  10. Diane says:

    Reason #4,732 that I don’t’ watch FOX.

  11. MsC says:

Don’t be silly, Lauren! Of course it’s only us gals who care about looks and deportment more than issues. Men have big man brains and are able to evaluate policy stances. Us gals just have to pick whose haircut we like better, don’t ya know.

  12. Knitty says:

    Sarah… who?

  13. Ali says:

Most of my friends lost their baby weight and did I. No one is jealous of her anyway although we fear her stupidity and her fanatical views. She did not have that Trigonmics kid anyway, her daughter did.

  14. Mistress_Scorpio says:

Seconding the last of Ri-chan’s comment and Ali’s. Sarah Palin is a cravenly opportunistic liar and an incurious moron.

  15. g8grl says:

What I don’t understand is why so many women HATE her. So she’s a right wing nut…do they hate Rush, Gingrich, Delay, and McCain with the same passion? No, they don’t agree with the male Repugs but they don’t hate them. What’s the difference? We call her all sorts of degrading names but they don’t have the same approach to her male counterparts. I don’t agree with her on anything but it’s sad that people get so ugly about the woman because she dares to promote her beliefs…and all the ugliness is accepted in supposedly moderate discourse.

  16. Laure68 says:

g8grl – actually, I do dislike Rush, Gingrich, and Delay as much as Sarah Palin. (I never found McCain to be quite as bad, just an opinion.) I think one big thing is that, during the election, women were being told that, if we supported Hillary, we should automatically back Sarah Palin (after Obama won the Dem primary). It was as if we liked Hillary only because she was a woman, not because of what she has accomplished in her life and what her ideas are. I personally found it extremely offensive that we were supposed to believe a woman is a woman, and what she has accomplished was not important. Hillary had a law degree from Yale, while Sarah barely finished community college. Their career accomplishments were so different. Why were we supposed to view them as equal?

  18. Amanda says:

I’m pretty sure feminists hate Sarah Palin because she’s not for killing babies before they’re born.

  19. Bunny says:

“Dares” to promote her beliefs? Her beliefs are hardly daring.

I think the main issue a lot of women have with her is that she’s an embarrassment – a woman who has made it this far in politics but who verifies every sexist cliche about women being too stupid to be in politics.

And if you don’t believe she’s stupid – you haven’t been paying attention.

  20. Ri-chan says:

g8grl- I do hate Rush, Gringrich, Delay, McCain, etc.. by the way.
