Doctors Remove 30-Year-Old Fetus From Woman

Getting on an exam table saved this woman from a 30-year-long pregnancy!

A Haitian woman has had a 30-year-old petrified fetus successfully removed from her abdomen at a hospital in the Dominican Republic. The condition is an extremely rare one known as a “stone baby” or lithopedion. Only about 300 have been recorded in medical history.

The 59-year-old women saw a doctor about acute abdominal pain she had suffered for decades, only to learn that she had been carrying a fetus for at least 3 decades.

During that time, she never before had access to adequate medical care, so she just suffered through the pain. The head of gynecology at the Dominican hospital that treated her said the fetus weighed 3 pounds 12 ounces.

Typically, a stone baby is the result of an ectopic pregnancy. They occur when the fetus is neither removed not absorbed by the woman’s body.

Can you imagine being pregnant for 30 years? This is literally the stuff of nightmares for me. Of course carrying a petrified fetus wouldn’t be at all like perpetually carrying a live one for decades, but it wouldn’t be any fun either. While this is a rare condition, it highlights how important access to good medical care is. Something like this should never happen to a woman.
