The Dream Act Stalls in Senatepaulabernstein
Have you been following the political battle surrounding the DREAM Act? If it had passed today, young illegal immigrants would have the chance to go to college, to join the military and to become American citizens.
But this afternoon, the DREAM Act, which was folded into the larger National Defense Authorization Act, stalled on a 56-43 vote in the Senate, four short of the 60 votes needed, CNN reports.
DREAM stands for Development, Relief and Education for Minor Aliens. The DREAM Act would have given hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants a shot at citizenship if they graduate from college or perform at least two years of military duty.
The Act was also tied to the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy which bans gays in the military, as well as an increase in defense spending.
Do you think the children of illegal immigrants deserve a shot at the American dream?
