While many WordPress bloggers complain about the frequency of updates, each release is a signal that the platform developers are dedicated to the product. Each update usually increases a security update. WordPress users will find there’s a great little feature hidden in WordPress versions 3.2 and later.
As a writer on the web, sometimes I find have the attention span of a squirrel on an extended espresso jag. Working from home, blocking out time to write and develop content is hard enough. Throw in the constant temptation to check on the stats of my site or answer email that just arrived and it’s amazing I ever complete an article. Eliminating distractions, especially disruptive visual clutter can go a long way toward increasing productivity. It may not silence the kids, but every effort toward productivity helps.
The Full Screen Edit Mode of WordPress 3.2 helps eliminate visual clutter that can serve as a distraction to writers.
The full screen edit mode is found in the toolbar above the text entry field.
Click the Toggle Fullscreen Edit to switch to the “quiet write” mode and all but the most crucial writing tools disappear. Now just wait a few seconds and even those minimal tools fade away. Don’t worry they will reappear with just a mouse-hover.
While you are in the fullscreen mode be sure to click the help icon to see a list of keyboard shortcuts. These simple commands will virtually eliminate your need to exit the fullscreen mode until your post has been completed
Now WordPress users are free to write in peace, without being reminded of SEO or keywords until after the framework of content has been established.
The Full Screen Text Editor will not save you from your own bad habits.
To that end I recommend:
- Turn off Twitter
- Close the Facebook tab
- Turn off all incoming phone notifications
- Don’t even think about opening your email
- Set a timer
Now write. Really, just write. Bad or poor writing can be polished in the editing phase.
The social world won’t come to a screeching halt in the hour or so spent creating your most valuable digital content, the writing on your own blog.
If your blog runs on the WordPress platform, check now to be sure you’ve upgraded to the latest release to ensure you can take full advantage of the fullscreen editing feature.
