… at least, that’s what the kids think. In a study conducted by AWeber Communications, a common theme emerged among teens and college students — that email is for businesses and grown-ups.
Email is perceived as more formal, while texting, Twitter and Facebook are for socializing. One respondent actually called email “a necessary evil that only grown-ups, teachers, and businesses use.” Whoah!
The “study” gleened some really insightful qualitative responses from students such as, “With the use of Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, our need for email is continually decreasing.” 41% of the participants are uncertain of email’s future as a means of communication.
AWeber collected data like this by offering $1000 scholarship. To enter, students had to submit a 500 word essay that addressed the following question:
Email is a primary means of communications for over one billion people around the world. It is one of the most popular online activities, according to Pew Internet.
However, it has been suggested that younger generations may eschew email in favor of other messaging technologies (for example, texting, Facebook and Twitter).

From their responses, it’s clear that Gen Y uses social networks to connect and build relationships. Social media truly is social for Millenials. The whole point of being on social platforms is for the social experience! They check texts and Facebook throughout the day while they may ignore email for days and weeks — expecting only coupons in their inbox. “I only receive emails from my school or stores sending me coupons.”
