Epically Geeky and Fantastically Creative Costumes For The Coolest Kids on the Block

Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

A child obsessed with a particular movie, show, or videogame is a force that must be reckoned with. And while you may roll your eyes when your adventurous child throws on his or her grotty old costume every day after getting home from preschool…. Halloween is that special time of year that geeky parents with some creativity can really help their offspring make their fanatical dreams come true.

One of the things I love best about Halloween is that it is the one day of the year when you might get a glimpse into the future of the neighborhood children and see who the goth-girls and super-geeks of tomorrow might be. Or at least which parents are the closet fanboys and fangirls of yesteryear. Because more often than not, they are dressed up with their kids, too. And you probably won’t recognize their costumes because they are that much hipper than you.

I’ve put together some of the coolest costumes to be found on the web that highlight the pint-sized nerds, geeks, fangirls, and the up-for-anything kids that take their costumes very seriously indeed. Added bonus: A few pictures of the moms and dads that proudly spawned some of the featured late-bloomers and creative techies of tomorrow.

  • Lego Boba Fett 1 of 21
    Lego Boba Fett
By far the coolest lego Star Wars costume to be found in miniature form. Every three-year-old should be so lucky to have a dad this dedicated.

  • The Corpse Bride 2 of 21
    The Corpse Bride
(Almost) Every little girl wants to be a bride. Only the extra special ones want to be dead when they do it. And don't even try to tell me this girl isn't going to have safety pins in her ears at 16.

  • Lego Witch with her little Boo 5 of 21
Lego Witch with her little Boo
This is mom's homemade costume to go with her daughter's Boo. Which begs the question: Is mom a professional costume designer? Wow.

  • Max from Where the Wild Things Are 6 of 21
Max from Where the Wild Things Are
I thought my kids were pretty darn cool when they fell in love with the oddball Fantastic Mr. Fox, but found they weren't so hip after all when they declared this Spike Jonze movie to be a snooze-fest. Here's the suit perfect suit for your little angry hipster.

  • The House from Up! 7 of 21
    The House from Up!
The movie is a straight-up hit, but the people responsible for this amazing costume are drowning in cool. And awesome.

  • Mario and Luigi 8 of 21
    Mario and Luigi
Nintendo wishes that Mario and Luigi were this adorable. For me, it's the giant gloves & oversize hats that so perfectly capture the cartoon quality of the characters.

  • Haku from Spirited Away 9 of 21
    Haku from Spirited Away
Even though Chihiro is the main character of Spirited Away, not too many kids are keen to embody the unhappy, selfish brat that she is at the beginning of the movie... Haku, however? Well, who wouldn't want to be the brave boy who ends up being a River spirit in the form of a dragon? ...Only the most evolved munchkins desire to be this anime hero.

  • Porco Rosso Pilot Pig 10 of 21
    Porco Rosso Pilot Pig
The perfect costume for the parents of Chihiro? Pilot pigs alá Porco Rosso! Any anime fans will be super-impressed by the family commitment and the nod to Spirited Away's parents being turned into swine, is cool, too.

  • Pippi Longstocking 13 of 21
    Pippi Longstocking
Only the smartest, most independent girl could pull off such an old-timey character as Pippi and actually make her seem cool. This costume is so awesome, it almost makes me wish for a modern re-make of the series!

Pokémon-Obsessed Kids? Here's the Perfect Outfit for Mom and Dad

  • Charizard from Pokémon 18 of 21

  • Abraham Lincoln 20 of 21
    Abraham Lincoln
Hey, adults know that Abe Lincoln was a cool guy. But how many kids know that and embrace it on such a personal level? Yeah, THAT kid. And he is awesome. And might be our president some day, so give him some extra candy, okay?

  • Edward Scissorhands 21 of 21
    Edward Scissorhands
This has to be the coolest "cool kid" costume ever made. Anyone who ever identified themselves as "alternative" would have to agree, right?
