Fetal Fad: Moms Photoshopping Sonograms Onto Baby Bumps

Rad fad or really bad?

Maternity photo shoots have developed from simple shots of women standing sideways showcasing their bellies into, well, into what you’re about to read.

Katie Baker over on Jezebel clued me in to the latest pregnancy photo fad: photoshopping sonograms onto baby bumps.

As Baker reports, the woman behind the popular Tumblr STFU Parents says the fetal fad appears to be taking the place of an old trend. “It’s become the new painted belly,” she said. “They’re doing it because they’re a little obsessive. There’s something inherently narcissistic about taking the time to create this ‘art.’ ”

Photographer Shelly Kuhn disagrees. “Women love seeing what their children look like on their belly, they find it intriguing … I would love to do more of these. But there is a debate over whether it’s morbid and disgusting or beautiful.”

I don’t think it’s “morbid” or “disgusting” or even “narcissistic” but I wouldn’t call it “beautiful” either. Definitely not for me, but I didn’t jump on the whole painted belly trend either. I’ve seen some cool stuff but I didn’t have the time nor the inclination to sit through someone painting on my big ol’ pregnant belly. I was too busy housing burritos and complaining.

While I really have no opinion on the photos, Amelia McDonell-Parry from The Frisky thinks sonogram belly shots are creepy. “I simply cannot give the thumbs up to poorly Photoshopping sonogram photos of your fetus in utero onto your bare pregnant belly. It looks creepy! And as far as ‘art’ goes, it seems a little literal, no? Unfortunately for me, this is apparently a trend so I’m expecting it to show up on my Facebook feed any day now. Sigh.”

What are your thoughts?

Morbid? Creepy? Narcissistic? Beautiful? Art?
