Comic books are feeling the love this week. On Friday The Avengers opened – which is set to be a record breaking debut (it already made a couple hundred million overseas last week)- giving Marvel Comic major kudos. And on Saturday, fans of the comic genre will have even more reason to celebrate. Saturday is Free Comic Book Day.
What is involved in a so called Comic Book Day?
First, you get something for free. And really, how can you not love something that is free. This Saturday – as the San Jose Mercury News stated – there will be about 3.5 million, yes, million, free comics given away at events all across the globe in an aim to “building communities among longtime fans and at capturing new readers.”
One of the goals of comic book day is to bring in young readers, who may be familiar with the characters from movies, TV and toys but may not have ever cracked open an actual comic book – the source of inspiration for such characters as Spiderman, Superman, and Iron Man. Riding on the coattails of the big weekend release of The Avengers, the comic “The Avengers 12.1″ that has been quoted that it “capitalizes” on the film.
As for the free comic releases, each area will be different all giving away different titles. A variety of comic book stores and also libraries will be participating in the day – you can go here to find out if there are any near you – an example our local library is participating all day tomorrow.
When was the last time you or your kids read a comic book?
