Free Shipping Day: A Gift For Busy MomsDanielle Sullivan
It’s been a while since I physically shopped in stores for the majority of holiday gifts. Ever since I realized I could leisurely browse online for thoughtful gifts for the family, I was hooked to online shopping.
When I was first married, like many other wives, I somehow got stuck with the brunt of the holiday gift selection and purchases. It wasn’t as difficult as it is now. There were less people in our family then. Now our family and friends have grown. While I’m pleased our loving circle has bloomed and very thankful for the people in our lives, I hate shopping!
Shopping is doable when I’m alone, but for most of us, we have to shop when we’re not working which usually means with our kids. For stay-at-home moms, dragging strollers and tired babies around in overcrowded, overheated stores is hellish. I’ve been there and done that when my first daughter was younger and I don’t want to do it anymore.
Besides now, I have three children, and the youngest is a boy who has as much desire to be trapped in a busy store as I have to be at a monster truck show. Too many times, the one item absolutely needed is out of stock which means traipsing the kids, strollers, bottles, diaper bags, hats, gloves, and mittens (you get the picture) on to the next store.
Along the same lines, you could not pay me enough to go after the Black Friday sales or even the day after Christmas deals. I’m a Cyber Monday girl through and through.
So when I heard what today was, I was more than a little excited.
December 17, 2010 is officially Free Shipping Day. There are exactly 1,723 online merchants that will be offering free shipping on purchases today and they promise home delivery by Christmas Eve. The merchants include Macy’s, Dell, American Eagle, Barnes and Noble, Kohl’s, Nordstrom, and more than a thousand others selling everything from clothing and electronics to furniture and pet needs. Some stores require free shipping codes.
Tomorrow is actually one week from Christmas and I still have gifts to buy. It’s not that I am a procrastinator. It’s just that my “to-do” list always seems to outweigh my “got it done” list coupled with some typical mommy interruptions. I’ve had two sick kids home this week, started a new gig, had holiday parties, and we are still training our new puppy who is requiring nearly as much attention as a baby. So I’m a little behind.
But thanks to Free Shipping Day, I may just get it done by midnight tonight. My fingers are crossed and hopes are high. Kids have been medicated, pup has been petted, and I am digging into my work deadlines so I can finally cross the shopping list of 2010 off my list.
And next year, I am starting early!
Have you finished holiday shopping? Do you mostly online shop or did you hit the stores and how did you manage with your kids in tow?
