It’s a kid classic – making up excuses for not having their homework done. From “the dog ate my homework” to “I was mugged and it was stolen,” to “aliens beamed it up to their planet,” they really do run the gamut. Apparently one third grader at Desert Springs Elementary in Tuscon is a pro at excuses. So much so that her teacher felt the need to give her a special honor – she bestowed upon her the “Catastrophe Award” for the most excuses given for not completing her homework. But this “award” was apparently not well received….
“She said the teachers announced the award in front of the whole class and all the children were laughing at her,” said the student’s mom Christina Valdez. The young girl reportedly felt humiliated by being singled out like that. Her mom went to the principal to complain saying, “she blew me off. And said it was a joke that was played and that the teachers joke around with the children.” Also – as Fox News mentions – the student was “confused and upset because she has a folder with all of her completed homework.”
Is this a case of public shaming or just in good fun, making light of a student’s behavior.
