It’s a face you have probably always recognized. Your parents probably always recognized it, too (and maybe even their parents). It’s the most famous and iconic baby face in the world: the blue, white ,and gray sketch drawing of big-eyed, tiny chinned Gerber baby.
That classic baby face will shortly be sharing the spotlight, however. Soon, browned-eyed, curly-haired, spunky little Mary Jane Montoya will become the face of the Gerber brand.
Eighty-six-year-old Ann Turner Cook, the original inspiration for the iconic Gerber baby sketch, welcomed, 8-month-old Mary Jane, winner of the search contest for the new face of the Gerber brand. The two Gerber babies met on the Today Show this week, where the contest winner was announced.
Cook talked a little about her experience as the Gerber baby; her face is till Gerber baby cute. Mary Jane’s parents told the Today Show how challenging it was to get just the right picture.
The Montoyas live in Fresno, Calif., and say they will put all of the $50,000 winnings toward their little star’s education. Meanwhile, Cook, who is a retired elementary school teacher and also a mystery writer, gave the little girl her stamp of approval. Mary Jane was chosen from more than 308,000 contestants.
Over at Colorlines, Jorge Rivas notes that the new Gerber baby is Latina and from one of the two states where Latinos make up a majority of the population and who represent a growing market share of the nation’s consumers.
