One of my primary goals for 2012 is to get more focused and more efficient when it comes to getting stuff done. I’ve been learning a great deal about juggling multiple projects this year as my client base for my consulting has grown as well as writing here and on my own blog it’s HARD to get it all done in a reasonable amount of time. I’ve found myself working for twelve hours or more a day and struggling with that horrid feeling of NOT GETTING IT DONE.
Realizing I needed to make a change, I’ve been thinking about what works and what doesn’t and have made a plan for the new year. I’m hoping that some of what I’ve come to realize might be helpful for you too.
One of the biggest things I’ve done is work on my awareness of what time of day is best for each task. For a long time I’ve leapt right into tackling my email in the mornings, but I came to realize that in fact I’m much better off writing first thing in the day. In fact, for my personal blog, I’ve taken to just logging into the blog and starting to write before doing ANYTHING else. Before breakfast, before Twitter, before it all (except getting my daughter to school, obviously). I’ve found that writing for me flows much more easily if I do it before my head fills up with the OH MY GOD moments of the day.
After I finish writing for my blog, I generally do a “putting out fires” email check before working on my MomCrunch articles. Sometimes I can only get a shell of a post done before I really have to start working on my emails, but it helps a great deal to have them done first. In fact, I find that when I DON’T do my MomCrunch posts early in the day they aren’t as good.
The other thing I’ve learned, alas, is that I have to limit my social media time. This is incredibly awkward, of course, because social media is actually a HUGE part of my work. So what I do during my busiest times of day is this: I check Twitter only every fifteen minutes (I know that might seem like a lot to some folks, and not enough to others), even dropping down to once every half hour when I’m SUPER busy. Facebook I only allow myself to check hourly. Everything else I save for the evenings when I’m just tying up loose ends and can hop around more freely without feeling that horrid panic that I’m forgetting something.
