Little Girls Grow Up Too Fast

Media Images Send the Wrong Message

Feminist author (and Facebook friend of mine) Courtney Martin writes on about the upcoming SPARK (Sexualization Protest: Action, Resistance, Knowledge) Summit at Hunter College in New York later this month.

The idea is to fight back against the early sexualization of girls. You know how I feel on the subject. I’ve written about babies in skimpy bikinis, toddlers in tiaras and 7-year-old “single ladies.”

As my colleague Sierra recently wrote: “Our kids are surrounded by a hyper-sexual culture all the time. Little girls in particular are being trained to be not only pretty but hot as soon as they learn to dress themselves.”

In short, it’s clear we need to educate our daughters about the messages they receive on a nonstop basis. Check out the video below if you need a refresher course in how the media markets sex to kids (and well, everyone). All of these sexy images of women can contribute to some serious problems for young girls including promiscuity, eating disorders, low self-esteem, depression and even suicide.

But even if you can’t make it to the conference, as Courtney says, “never fear; these folks are starting a movement.” Thank goodness for that!
