Gorgeous Children Shine in the National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest (PHOTOS)

Nobody does photos like National Geographic — and the startling and spectacular images don’t necessarily even come from their professional photographers. The 25th annual National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest is underway in which photographers of all levels are invited to “harness the power of photography and share [their] stunning travel experiences from around the globe.”

Travel, outdoor scenes, sense of place and spontaneous moments are the contest’s categories, and prizes include a 10-day Galápagos National Geographic Expedition for two, a photography workshop and gift certificates to B&H Photo.

Among the photos already submitted, some of the stand-outs include images of kids from all over the world simply being kids. Don’t be surprised if they take your breath away.

Here are some of the most extraordinary:

It took a three-day drive in rugged conditions to meet the Suri tribe. The community is nestled in one of the toughest and most remote places on Earth-the Ethiopia/Sudan border. Despite the harsh conditions, the Suri take great pride and joy in decorating their  bodies. This young Suri boy is covered in yellow and red ochre from a creek bed near our camp. These marks of distinction are used to attract women and to intimidate enemies in battle. There is a fascination and almost obsession with appearance. Suri apply the paint using flowers, sticks, bottle tops and cartridge cases.

Mikael ¡nde, a child of S·mi reindeer herders, takes a break indoors after a long, cold day of rounding up the animals for vaccinations and slaughter. Children of reindeer herders learn to handle these animals and the land they thrive in from infancy - young Mikael here knew far more about the ways of nature than I could ever hope to learn.

  • For a Fleeting Moment 7 of 9
    National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest

During a kind of childhood rite-of-passage (being on the beach for the first time), my daughter discovered what happens when snacks spill and fly in the company of seagulls. For a brief moment, I let her (and myself) bask in the wonderment of luring hungry seagulls to hover overhead, before giving her the "never feed wildlife" lecture. It was a guilty indulgence that paid off with this amazing shot, where the power of perspective creates the illusion that she is touching the bird.

I was taking some shots on the beach of Taghazout, Morocco, when this little guy came up to me asking in what hand he was holding a coin. After playing along I asked if I could take his picture.
