The first big blogging conference of the year is just a few weeks away! Blissdom ’12 is happening in Nashville, Tennessee starting on February 23rd. I’m really looking forward to this year’s conference, particularly since I’m a community leader (don’t niche me in, folks!). I’m also looking forward to the change in format they are doing this year, and feeling ready to immerse myself in the business and beauty of blogging again.
But I know a lot of folks might be headed to Blissdom for the first time, so I thought I’d share my advice as a two-time veteran. First and foremost? I’m gonna say this, and you’ll have to forgive my language: F**K THE SHOES.
One of the most awesome things about Blissdom (in my opinion) is the locale. The hotel is MASSIVE. Please don’t think I’m exaggerating. The hotel is so big it has a river with a river boat. INSIDE. Yes. INSIDE. It’s basically three massive bio-domes connected. You will be walking a huge amount, and that’s without even leaving the hotel. I cannot tell you how many women I’ve seen at Blissdom limping back to their rooms at night with bloody feet and their heels in their hands. Yes, we all want to look cute. But more than that, we want to NOT be in pain.
So bring shoes that won’t kill your feet.
Secondly, take the time to review the schedule before hand. Get familiar with it, pick out what you want to attend, and then… use it as a guideline. Don’t write it in stone, though you never know when an amazing conversation could happen, and don’t lock yourself into running off to the next session when you really want to finish that chat. Because the connections you make at Blissdom will be the most important thing you leave with, I promise.
Third: commit to introducing yourself to that blogger that you deeply admire but worry about “bothering.” Trust me: no matter who that blogger is, they will feel flattered and honored that you want to meet them and read their blog. I promise.
Lastly! Do this for yourself. Do at least ONE THING during the conference that scares you. Sing karaoke (I will if you will). Dance like no one is watching. Invite a favorite blogger to join you for dinner. I promise you if you stretch yourself at Blissdom, the rewards will amaze you.
If you’re going to be there, be sure to seek me out. I’m the short fat girl with pink hair. Can’t want to meet you!
