People Are Paying for a One-Way Ticket to Mars, But This Mom Is Staying Home

Mars

Prime real estate, although a bit of a fixer-upper

If you missed out on the opportunity to purchase the Brooklyn Bridge (don’t you just hate when that happens), don’t despair — there’s another high-profile property deed that could be yours for the taking! But you must act fast!

A group called Mars One is offering an unique opportunity for living on Mars! Before you get too excited, however, know that while they’re asking for money via an Indigogo campaign, it’s for research that will help them “jumpstart the first major step” in their project, which is a private “Mars Lander and Satellite mission in 2018.”

Your participation, they say, will help show their “partners and sponsors that the world is ready for this to happen.” It’s unclear why they can’t show their partners and sponsors that the world is ready for this to happen. It’s also fuzzy as to why money from people like, say, me, will be representative of the world.

And yet, their goal is $400,000, and they’re already more than halfway there. That tells me that either, in fact, the world is ready for more space exploration, or that there are people out there with so much money and time on their hands that they have literally run out of things to do with both. I’m going with the latter, but if you are warming up to the former, be sure to check your mail for the latest publisher’s sweepstakes mailing — I’ve got a good feeling about you!

I’d like to be one of those people who believe Mars-living will happen in their lifetime. Except that if I had lots of time and money to donate to the cause, I wouldn’t fund someone else’s Mars fantasy. I’d sleep. In the bigger bed that I’d buy with the more money. I wouldn’t be opposed to living on Mars if it meant a real break from my kids, but knowing them, they’ll still figure out a way to find me and refill their water bottles.

I’d say that funding an exploration to Mars for other people to live there would not only be the last thing I’d spend my money on, but I would first pick up dog poop with my money and burn it before wasting it on this project. Is Bernie Madoff one of the great minds behind this? How about the think tank behind the Nigerian lottery? What about that iPad on that site that can be yours for just 1-cent?

It’s not often that I feel like the smartest person in the room, or anywhere for that matter. But reading about life on Mars, and watching the video below? I just know Harvard will be knocking on my door at any moment, begging me to accept an honorary degree.

Ultimately the project aims to “establish a permanent human settlement on Mars.” By giving money to make it happen? “This can be your mission to Mars.”

If that doesn’t work out for you, however, come talk to me. I’ve got a way where you can earn $2,000 — $5,000 every day by working from home. Find out how now!
