What happened to the good old fashioned Jack O’ Lantern? The one with the triangle eyes, matching nose and square teeth? Pumpkin carving of yore has been replaced with a quest to outdo the neighbors near and far with originality artistry, and awesomeness.
Over the weekend we made a pilgrimage to local Target and there were a slew of kits to transform the humble pumpkin into the pop culture realm from a Disney Princess pumpkin to Spiderman. But those kits? They still take skill and patience, two things kids often don’t yet possess. This year, I am yet again sticking with my old school guns and we’ll be doing the basic triangle, square, easy-peasy pumpkin carving.
Although I do opt to stay true to the simple Jack O’ Lantern, it’s hard to not be impressed with the craftsmanship that goes into to these awe-inspiring, albeit very temporary, works of pumpkin art.
