Jennifer Grey Is Psyched For Dirty Dancing Remake; Are You?

I’ll never forget the first time I saw Dirty Dancing, at a sleepover at my best friend’s house in 4th grade. I remember the thrill of our mothers finally agreeing that yes, for her 10th birthday, we could be deemed old enough to watch this movie.

We were instantly obsessed. An obsession shared with just about every girl my age and more than a few guys I’ve met. The dancing! The clandestine sex! The watermelon!

I’ve watched Dirty Dancing as an adult, and I still like it (though I won’t be watching it with my kids anytime soon). Apparently, I’ll soon be able to watch a remake of it on the big screen. But why would I want to, when the original was perfect?

That feeling seems to be shared by a lot of people. I like the Philly Inquirer’s take on this:

Is there one fan of the film who believes it can be made better? Is there some new CGI effect that will make its 1960s Catskills setting more vivid? Can Kenny Ortega bring more to a new version as director than he did as the choreographer of the original?

To answer their presumably rhetorical question though, there is at least one fan of the original who is looking forward to the remake. Jennifer Grey, who you all know played Baby the first time around, is psyched that it’s being remade. She told the Wall Street Journal:

I’m so excited about this news and I think there’s nobody better to do this than my beloved Kenny Ortega who is as responsible as anyone for the success of the first one.  I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do with it.

Jennifer Grey being excited about the remake almost makes me want to see it. Almost. What it really makes me want to do is snuggle down on the couch with my BFF and a bowl of popcorn and watch her dancing with Patrick Swayze again.

Will you be rushing out to see the new Dirty Dancing?
