I gotta tell you, I got an extra special kick out of seeing Jillian Michaels in the news again commenting about parenthood because the very first post I wrote here at Babble just over two years ago now was about that huge media gaffe she made when she said she would never get pregnant because she didn’t want to ruin her body. Michaels initially tried to heal the wound she created with mommybloggers by saying, “I think that pregnancy is admirable and selfless. For myself, I have remnant body issues left over from childhood which leads me to make adoption my personal choice down the road.”
Then in 2011 she came out – yes, in the gay way – and said that she made those comments about pregnancy because she was ashamed that her endometriosis would prevent her from having a successful pregnancy of her own. She told The New York Times, “I was ashamed about it because I thought I’m supposed to be the healthiest woman in the world, and what does this say about me if I can’t have kids of my own,” she says. “It was insecurity, which I have to work on.”
Now Michaels has adopted a 2-year-old girl from Haiti who arrived just days before her partner gave birth to a boy earlier this month. Here’s what Michaels has to say about the reality of parenthood setting in:
“How has motherhood changed me? In just about every possible conceivable way. It changes your DNA, it changes every aspect of your personality, your psychology, your physicality even.” And that’s WITHOUT having given birth! So it looks like adoption can ruin your body, too. It’s that whole lack of sleep thing, Jillian. Welcome to it!
Lisa Belkin at HuffPo notes that Michaels is back on coffee after two years without it and she hasn’t been to the gym in two weeks. Michaels told People, “I have to figure out how to take care of myself right now. Telling moms ‘You need to put yourself first’? It’s impossible to put yourself first when you’re a Mom…Parenting is not for sissies. You have to sacrifice and grow up.” Amen. Maybe now she gets it that some of us have sacrificed hours of cardio to actually be able to spend time with our kids, ruined bodies and all.
But seriously, do check out this video of Michaels and her family on People.com. Cute lesbian couple with a mixed race family? Melts my out-of-shape heart.
