As KIRO 7 in Washington reports, they opened the casket to see him one last time but found was the wrong dead man. It was a strange man wearing Jerry Moon’s clothes and holding a photo of Moon and his wife, Jan.
“I turned around and said to myself three times, ‘That’s not him, that’s not him, that’s not him,” son Randy Moon told KIRO 7.
The children were understandably shocked. But that wasn’t even the worst part.
Their dad, who was terrified of being cremated, had been cremated. As KIRO 7 reports, Brown Mortuary somehow mixed up the bodies. The parent company, Service Corporation International, won’t comment. But it should. SCI runs roughly 1,400 funeral homes and 400 cemeteries in the United States and Canada.
“This makes me feel like he was treated as a number, not a person,” daughter Cheryl Moon said.
The family has since learned that their father’s body was mixed up with the body of a 97-year-old man who died in hospice care at the same time.
“The only other thing I can say is we know where he really is,” Randy Moon said. “We’re a believing family, and we believe he is in heaven.”
