For some women a mama’s boy is a red flag when it comes to marriage but what about a guy who would go so far as to lie on his mother for you? According to the Irish Examiner, Bruno Schmidt attempted to pin his wife’s traffic violation on his mother as part of his effort to prevent penalty points. As a result of his dishonesty he has “been charged with giving false information under the Road Traffic Acts.”
According to the man charged with such, his rational for lying was that he panicked when they had received the speeding notice. Just days prior his wife was already “detected” for an offense that could result in penalties. Unlike his wife his record was clean but what does come into question is his conscience.
The judge handling the case described what Schmidt had done as “nasty” despite accepting that it was done out of panic.
The punishment for his lie –– a fee thanks to the Probation Act. I can only imagine what the punishment, for lying in general, would have been from his mother had he been a teenage boy. Based on how things turned out, she had sense enough to let the administration know that she was not in Ireland at the time of the offense upon receiving the notice. I would imagine, in the event that she has not done so already, she will probably let him know that what he did was not ok. Surely she raised him better than that.
Most of us are taught from our parent(s) early on that “honesty is the best policy.” While marriage often means that your spouse becomes your priority lying for them at the possible expense of your own parent seems like a rather odd way to show your devotion to them. As for his wife, I am guessing she isn’t her mother in law’s biggest fan? For more on this story visit the Irish Examiner.
What are your thoughts on this story? Do you think his response was purely out of panic? Was the judge too easy on him?
