In case you missed it, comedian Jenny Slate and director Dean Fleischer-Camp (a real-life romantic couple – aww) created a beloved web video back in August called Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. The short film wasn’t originally intended for children, but it’s perfect for them nonetheless. Slate’s voice as Marcel is the epitome of adorable and Dean’s stop-motion animation is beautifully executed.

Marcel has since taken home several prizes and honors including Best Animated Short at AFI Fest and was an Official Selection of the Sundance Film Festival, the New York Int’l Children’s Film Festival and the REDCAT International Children’s Film Festival.

It was announced today that the Penguin Young Readers Group will publish a book titled “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On: Things About Me” through their imprint Razorbill.  The book is due out in November and will feature oil paintings based on Marcel’s active life.  (He uses the toenails of a man to ski.  This shell’s got moxie.)  There will also be an interactive version that plays Slate’s voice.  If you haven’t yet seen the video, you’ll love it.  It’s charming, goofy and filled with pathos.  Grab the kids and enjoy:
