I have a confession. I am a criminal. I am not a murderer, shoplifter or jaywalker. Rather I broke the law by buying my daughter Kinder Surprise eggs. But in my defense, I did not know they were illegal. A couple of local shops sell these popular chocolate eggs with tiny toys inside, and I was none the wiser that there was a U.S. ban on the treats. The reason? Because Kinder Eggs contained, “non-nutritive objects.” But that didn’t stop people from trying to smuggle them into the states, but also from some stores selling them. In 2011, it was reported that, “Customs and Border Protection seized 25,000 Kinder Eggs.”
But here is the good news! We no longer have to be deprived of chocolate eggs with tiny toys inside! There is now a legal option, the brand new and approved Choco Treasure. The difference between the Choco Treasure and Kinder Surprise is that the toy capsule is visible between the two halves of the chocolate egg.
The makers of Kinder Surprise and Choco Treasure stated that:
“We worked closely with both of these agencies to meet or exceed their requirements and ensure that Choco Treasure is fun and safe for all ages. While we were at it, we also made a few other changes to make sure Choco Treasure is as tasty as can be for American kids!”
And just in time for Easter!
