The new American Girl Doll of the Year is here! The new American Girl Doll of the Year is here! The new American Girl Doll of the Year is here! Yes, that is an outburst of enthusiasm as I get in touch with my inner 8-year-old or talk to my own American Girl Doll obsessed 6-year-old.
For those of you not as well versed in the American Girl oeuvre, at the beginning of each year the uber-popular doll company releases a contemporary doll that celebrates the modern American girl (all their other dolls are based on historic eras). As 2012 comes to a close, we say goodbye to McKenna the American Girl Doll of the Year 2012, the doll who loves gymnastics. And now we give a great big hello to the 2013 doll of the year – Saige Copeland!
Saige comes to us from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She loves to paint and to go horseback riding. The Saige line includes items that celebrate New Mexico from a colorful hot air balloon to a Navajo inspired sweater and cowboy boots. But her story is not just about the rustic Southwest styling, it’s about something very timely to kids today; saving their schools.
In the first book – Saige Paints the Sky (written by Jessie Haas) – Saige answers a call to action when her school is hit with budget cuts and her beloved art class is cut. Saige than organizes a fundraiser in the form of a “save the arts” parade and she borrows her grandmother’s horse Picasso for the event, but after her grandmother is injured, the task becomes even more challenging and Saige must overcome obstacles in her way.
To honor the “save the arts” message, American Girl has partnered with Americans for the Arts in a promotion names “Shine on Now” to support arts in school via grants for schools funded by American Girl.
But back to the doll; Saige is absolutely lovely. She has long brown hair (perfect for braiding), freckles, and her purple dress is accented with a Southwest inspired belt, paying homage to her hometown. Yes, the girls will love her.
Saige will be available for sale in stores and on their website starting on January 1st and will be available for just one year. You can check out more photos of Saige right here:
