Michigan Couple Plasters Adoption Hopes on BillboardMeredith Carroll
So many couples looking to expand their family are often willing to go to the ends of the earth for a baby. However, one husband and wife in Clarkston, Michigan, are looking more up than out. They’re shouting their desire to adopt via a billboard.
Last month Josh and Wendy Rougeau purchased a billboard on an interstate in the Grand Blanc area that shows a photo of them with their phone number and the message, “Loving Couple Looking To Adopt! Josh & Wendy.”
The Rougeaus were married in July 2009 and tried to get pregnant for a year and a half before deciding adoption was their next step. They started working with an adoption agency over the summer, although upon realizing the process could take years, they decided on the billboard to speed up their chances.
The couple also regularly wears t-shirts announcing their desire to adopt, and pass out flyers and business cards with their names and phone number. The director at the adoption agency they’re working with couldn’t be more supportive of their efforts.
“If people just wait, (the full process) can be years. If people can be proactive and spread the word, it speeds up the process immensely,” Jan Weaver told MLive.com. “To me it says they really want it badly. … It’s not that they’re crazy. It’s just that they’re ready.”
The billboard comes down on Saturday, and so far the couple has not had any luck, but they say it’s more about networking and getting out their message. While announcing the desire for a baby via a billboard, posters and t-shirts might be too public or loud for some people, obviously this couple is doing what they feel they need to do. And as anyone who feels they’re ready to become a parent knows, you want to do everything in your power to complete your family, and the traditional methods obviously didn’t make this couple feel as if they were being aggressive enough. Here’s hoping their efforts pay off soon.
Would you put up a billboard to announce your desire to adopt?
