Miracle Baby Born in Tragic Aftermath of Aurora ShootingMonica Bielanko
Just days before his birth, little Hugo Jackson Medley’s life was almost over as his mother barely escaped a hail of bullets.
Katie Medley was one of several people who made it out of an Aurora movie theater alive on midnight last Friday.
Hugo was born at 7:11 a.m. on Tuesday. Both mom and baby are doing well. But Dad, Caleb, is in the same hospital in a medically-induced coma after he was shot in the face.
He was put in the back of a police cruiser and driven to University of Colorado hospital. A spokesperson for the Medleys says he has lost his right eye and suffered brain damage.
Katie and Caleb’s love story began back in high school. As MSNBC reports, they started dating during their senior year in the small town of Florence, Colorado and eventually got married when they were 21 years old.
On that last night before everything changed Caleb and Katie decided to treat themselves to one last night out before they’d need a babysitter.
Now the entire family is in the hospital as Mom brings in new life and dad hovers close to death. And, like many young couples in America these days, the couple doesn’t have health insurance. “Caleb and his family have no insurance, and these hospital bills are going to be well into the hundreds if not thousands if not millions. Caleb and Katie will be struggling with these hospital bills for the rest of their lives,” the couple’s close friend Michael West wrote on a website he started to help raise money for the Medleys.
The website dedicated to Caleb Medley has raised more than $310,000. The goal is $500,000.
A Facebook page that has been liked by more than 7,000 people also documents the family’s journey since the shooting that so drastically altered their lives.
In a posting on Tuesday West writes:
Caleb is still in critical condition, but is stable and is showing multiple signs of improvement. Caleb has been to three surgeries so far, and is looking better every day. Katie has had her baby, Hugo, at 0711 this morning, he is 7 lbs 4 oz, 18 ½ inches long, and looks very healthy! Katie took Hugo down to the ICU hours after birth to share a moment with her husband Caleb (who is still in a medically induced coma). Caleb showed signs that he could recognize that Katie and his newborn son were with him in the room. His blood pressure rose, his pulse rose, and he was squeezing Katie’s hand harder than he has since he’s been in the hospital.
Caleb and the entire Medley family have a long road ahead of them. If you would like to donate to Caleb’s medical fund click here.
