Lynn Cameron is 19 and suffers from “profound mental deficits” as well as cerebral palsy, which is why her mom says she can no longer care for her.
Eva Cameron, Lynn’s mom, said she won’t take her daughter back after letting her out to use the bathroom at the Big Orange Bar in Caryville, Tenn., on June 28, according to the New York Daily News (via the Knoxville News Sentinel).
Because Lynn is not a minor and not assigned to a legal guardian, Eva technically didn’t commit a crime and won’t be charged.
The assistant police chief in Caryville told CNN: “As terrible as it is, unfortunately there is nothing we can do. There is no doubt we need a law for mental health rights, but pending this investigation, we just don’t know what else to do.”
After Lynn was left in the bar, her mom drove back to Illinois. She said she chose the state of Tennessee to become her daughter’s ward because she said it has the “No. 1 health care system in the United States of America.”
Lynn was at the bar for 20 minutes before she was found (after an anonymous tip was given to police) with no identification. Her vocabulary is limited — 30 to 40 words — and couldn’t communicate to authorities who she was or where she was from.
Eva said she has another disabled child and it was too much of a struggle to care for both.
Lynn is said to be “doing fantastic” and “will be housed at a facility for adults and children with disabilities.”
