There are certain things you just don’t do with your 4-year-old child. You don’t let him skip breakfast, lunch or dinner. You don’t leave her at home unattended, and you don’t take him out to an Irish Pub and give him shots of beer. But 44-year-old Gretchen Lynn Kinnear didn’t get the memo about the last one.
According to reports, Kinnear allegedly took her young son to McHale’s Irish Pub in Fort Mill, North Carolina, and gave him sips of blonde beer samples that she had received. What did her son say about his mom’s drink choice for him?
He didn’t call the beverage “beer” but rather “tea.” He told authorities that it “tasted funny and made him laugh a lot.” Her son “also said that the ‘tea’ that his mom gives him makes him dizzy.” The boy added that he had “tea” sometimes at home and the mom confessed that she occasionally drank wine at home and let her son have sips there as well.
The woman was arrested after she was spotted giving the beer to her son by a pub patron. She had been asked to cease giving her son the beer by the management of the pub, but apparently continued to do so. Soon after the police were called and she was booked on contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She was later released on a $3,000 bond.
Kinnear added that she “doesn’t do it to get him drunk or keep him quiet,” but didn’t give any motive to why she does let her son have sips of alcoholic beverages.
Do you think a mother should be arrested for giving her child small amounts of alcohol? In some cultures, like in certain countries in Europe, parents give children the occasional glass of wine or beer, without any judgement or punishment. Do you think we in America overreact to children trying alcoholic beverages in small amounts?
