Most Unusual Baby Names of 2012 Revealed…And My Predictions for 2013

The website BabyCenter has revealed its list of Unusual Baby Names for 2012. According to their surveys, each of these names was given to at least two babies this year. Some of the names included on its list are only “unusual” because they’re non-English. The name “Jeevika,” for example, comes from India, and means “water.”  The boy’s name “Htoo” is Burmese.

On the other hand, some of the names are just plain made-up. Which is all well and good, unless you’re the kid named Hippo. Or the girl named Thinn. (No lie, they’re on the list.)

Here are some of the highlights from BabyCenter’s list of unusual girls’ names — and my predictions for 2013:

  • Couture  2013: Etsy
  • Deva  2013: Honey (Boo Boo)
  • Excel  2013: Windows9 (because nobody likes Windows8)
  • Fedora  2013: Hipster Glasses
  • Inny  2013: Outie
  • Jury  2013: Probation
  • Oasis  2013: Coldplay
  • Starlit  2013: Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, or Rainbow Dash
  • Zealand  2013: Tolkien
And for boys:
  • Aero  2013: Postale
  • Ball  2013: Mitt
  • Burger  2013: Nugget
  • Casanova  2013:  Mayer (as in John)
  • Cello  2013: YOLO
  • Cobain  2013: Psy
  • Donathan 2013: Jonathan (“It’s the new Donathan!”)
  • Espn 2013: Cnn
  • Google 2013: Yahoo! (Insist the exclamation point always be used.)
  • Jedi  2013: Jedi. Because you really just can’t go wrong with this one.
  • Kix  2013:  Chex
  • Rysk  2013: Monopoli
  • Tron  2013: Rovio

Not included in BabyCenter’s list, but making the news in 2012:

  • A baby girl was named Hashtag. As in, a Twitter #hashtag. The 2013 version will be “Status,” combining the upscale allure of “Couture” with the social media fun of “Facebook.”
  • Uma Thurman named her baby girl Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence Thurman-Busson. She will go by “Luna” for short. The 2013 version of this will be whatever Prince William and Duchess Catherine name their baby.
Remember, you heard it here first.
