Mothers, Teachers, Friends: The Women Who Have Changed Our Lives

By babbleeditors |

It’s hard to predict what moments — and people — will end up shaping our lives. Whether it’s the beginning of a longstanding mentorship or a chance crossing of paths, the right person can change your career, your perspective, your future — or just be there to remind you to shower and brush your teeth.

In honor of International Women’s Day, we asked Babble staff and bloggers to share a woman who has changed their life for the better. From mothers, teachers, best friends, and mentors, the list is awe-inspiring — and may encourage you to go out of your way to thank someone’s made an impact on you.

Mothers, Teachers, Friends: The Women Who Have Changed Our Lives

My mom

My mother has always influenced and guided me as a child and a parent, but one of the most important things she did was encourage me to move to New York when the magazine I was working for relocated its offices there. "Try it for a year," she said. "You don't get many opportunities to live in New York with a job waiting for you, and if you hate it, you can always move back home."

I guess it comes as no surprise that the woman who changed my life the most is my mother, Joanne. Like any good mother, she made me (and my brother) her entire world, sacrificing everything, doing anything and everything to make us smile. She raised us the way she wished she was raise, with love and compassion and a selflessness this world has never seen. My mom once told me that I was what she was most proud of in her life — that I was her biggest accomplishment. There are no words for me to properly tell her that in this life, in my life, having her as a mother is my greatest accomplishment and the biggest blessing I could ever receive.

Its pretty funny that Danielle is inspired most by her late sister who she used to refer to as a “welfare sucking #$@$#” Once her sister was on her death bed, Danielle suddenly swooped in to act like a saint. Talk trash then act like you had this amazing relationship. Good going Danielle. As always, trying to look like the good guy. Oh, and you wouldnt even give your mother one of the free laptops you got at Blogher. The mother who you look up to, you couldn’t even share your swag. What a lovely daughter.
