My heart stops whenever I hear the words “school” and “shooting” in the same sentence. Schools are supposed to be safe havens, places where minds are expanded, not a place where lives are taken. Schools are supposed to be places where ideas are discussed, not a place where bullets pierce flesh. But on Tuesday, there was yet another school shooting, this time in Texas.
The details are still murky, but this is what we know so far. According to KWTX, students at the Lone Star College in north Harris County were evacuated after a gunman opened fire outside of a classroom at the community collage. According to ABC13, three people have reportedly been shot and two of them have “multiple gunshot wounds” and have been rushed to the hospital.
“We know that shots have been fired and we are in a shelter-in-place situation on the campus,” said Vicki Cassidy, the manager of media relations for Lone Star College System. “It’s a pretty chaotic scene at this point in time.”
This comes just six days after President Barack Obama gave a moving speech calling for more gun control. The laws that he has requested are far from being a reality, but how many more instances like this have to happen before the opponents of gun control laws realize that something must be done, before more blood is shed and more innocent lives are lost?
