It’s every mother’s worst nightmare and the stuff of shows like Law & Order. 13-year-old Ohio girl Sarah Maynard was found “bound and gagged in the basement of a home in Mount Vernon,” Knox County Sheriff David Barber said at a news conference today. The home’s resident, 30-year-old Matthew Hoffman, was arrested and charged with kidnapping, with additional charges possible. Sarah and her 10-year-old brother Kody were last seen Wednesday at school; both children went missing along with their mother and a family friend on Thursday. Police are still searching for the three remaining missing persons.
It’s unclear whether or not Hoffman has any connection to the Maynard family. According to ABC News, “Police reported Saturday that an unusual amount of blood was found in the home of Maynard’s mother, Tina Herrmann, after the four vanished.” Herrmann’s ex-husband Larry Maynard told reporters that a co-worker of Herrmann’s “went inside the home and saw blood and things out of place before calling police.”
Herrmann and her children had been living with Greg Borders, Herrmann’s soon-to-be ex boyfriend. Officials have not fingered Larry Maynard or Borders as suspects in the case.
