Toy Story 3 Surprises With Best Picture Nomination

Oscar nominations and Toy Story 3
Third animated film to get Best Picture nomination

Academy Award nominations were announced today and to the surprise of some (including the producer of the film), the animated Pixar movie “Toy Story 3″ is in the running for Best Picture.

This is only the third time in history that the Academy has nominated an animated film for Best Picture.

“Beauty and the Beast,” was nominated in 1991, and “Up” was nominated last year. “Beauty and the Beast” and “WALL-E” have the most nominations (six) for animated films so far.

“Toy Story 3″ gets a nod in part because it successfully entertains and engages kids of all ages and adults alike. Personally, it’s the only movie that I will happily join my preschooler on the couch to watch. I laugh out loud at some parts and yes, I cry virtually on-cue at the opening home-video montage.

Here are the other awards “Toy Story 3″ is up for, and who it would have to beat to take the Best Picture award:

Other Best Picture nominations:

“Black Swan”

“The Fighter”

“The Kids Are All Right”

“127 Hours”

“The Social Network”

“True Grit”

“Winter’s Bone.”

The top contenders seem to be “The King’s Speech” and “The Social Network.”

But Toy Story 3 is nominated for 5 Oscars — best picture, animated feature, sound editing, original song and adapted screenplay.

Have you watched Toy Story 3 with (or without) your kids?
