With the media buzzing about Prince William getting engaged to Kate Middleton, I couldn’t help but wonder how William’s brother Harry feels about all of this. CBS reports that Harry was the first to congratulate his big brother on his engagement, but given that Harry’s only 26 years old and split with his girlfriend Chelsy Davy just under a year ago, the prospect of his own wedding seems a bit far off. That doesn’t mean Harry doesn’t have grand plans for his own life, however. TIME magazine reports that the one thing Harry wants most right now is to fight for his country in Afghanistan.
According to TIME, “Harry, third in line for the British throne, spent 10 weeks in Afghanistan in the winter of 2007-2008. He was pulled from the front after the news leaked on The Drudge Report.” Harry told reporters this summer, “I would love to go back, I really would. As long as my military career allows it and politically it’s allowed, then I will serve my country as any other soldier.”
The prince is currently training with the Army Air Corps to be an Apache helicopter pilot, a position that has less inherent risk than his previous deployment on the ground with the Household Cavalry. It seems that Harry doesn’t mind the idea of hand-to-hand combat, saying, “At the end of the day you train for war, it’s as simple as that. If we could be at peace then fantastic but if we’re at war then you want to be with your brothers in arms. You train for a reason and you want to be there, you want to help your buddies left and right of you.”
Ironically, Harry’s bravery and loyalty make him great husband material. And I’m sure there’s no shortage of young women out there who’d like to give the adorable prince the opportunity to show what a perfect mate he’d be.
