Elementary School Chorus Covers The Smiths

ps22, the smiths

The famous public school choir goes emo.

That PS22 chorus nails it again!

Remember the Staten Island elementary school’s kids choir that sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” at the Oscars this year? They’ve moved beyond MGM musicals, beyond Lady Gaga and Katy Perry and Eminem. They’ve moved into emo territory and are covering The Smiths.

Watch PS22 chorus sing “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want” after the jump.

PS22 released the video yesterday on their blog. Notice at the end, Gregg Breiberg, the chorus director, says they just learned the song that day. I’m not saying Morrissey is terribly complicated, but the song is no “Wheels on the Bus!” and they’re wonderful. The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr even tweeted about it.

What’s the Bravo exec got to say about this performance?

The kids really get into it, not just with their voices but also gestures — thumbs down for loneliness; heart grabs for desire! The sick side of me wants them to take on “There’s a Light That Never Goes Out,” and see their reaction to the 10-tonne truck.

I’m pretty jealous of these choir students. Back in my day, the choir teacher was way into Jim Croce and Burt Bacharach.
