Phil says spring is on the way!

7:09am: Pennsylvania’s renowned groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, is scheduled to make his annual appearance at Gobblers Knob in just minutes at 7:25 a.m. today. Most of the country is waiting with fingers crossed for the famous creature to not see his shadow because we can really use some spring time weather.

7:14am: The Punxsutawney town officials are making their way to Gobbler’s Knob to begin the festivities. The inner circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club welcomes the crowd to its 125th birthday celebration.

7:20am: The official rules are outlined and the scrolls are presented, either spring or 6 more weeks of winter is on the way. Jeers and chants erupt from the crowd.

7:21am: The chants start, “Phil, Phil, Phil!” It’s time to wake up Phil.

7:22am: “Ladies and gentlemen, Punxsutawney Phil!”  The groundhog is introduced.

7:23am: The President says: “On Gobbler’s Knob on this beautiful Groundhog Day February 2, 2011,” greets the handlers and then proclaims, “The Steelers are going to the Superbowl!”

7:25am: “He surveyed his surroundings carefully and found that there was no shadow around…so an early spring it will be! Prepare yourself for warmth!” The crowd entertains both jeers and cheers, and then the festive music from the movie Groundhog Day takes over the intercom and day long festivities will continue in Town Square.

For the rest of us not at Gobbler’s Knob … whew! We need some springtime weather!

Update: 7:50am: More good news….For those of us in New York City, Staten Island Chuck has concurred with Phil and also did not see his shadow.
