Just learned about this amazing new online educational tool (honestly, it’s more of toy if you ask me, but playing with it is certainly an enlightening experience!) via Jezebel called the Gendered Advertising Remixer. It allows the user to mashup the audio from a toy ad targeted at either girls or boys with the video for another targeted at the opposite gender. Not only are the results surprisingly hilarious, they illustrate exactly how much we encourage kids to identify as intensely masculine and feminine from day one. That’s nothing that comes as a surprise to our readers, of course, but there’s something about the mashup of marketing tactics here that will allow you to see this issue in a refreshing light.

Make your own mashups using the Gendered Advertising Remixer. I bet it would be fun to mashup the audio and video from ads of the same gender, too. Also, I’m sure your kids would have a blast with this, if you feel like talking to them about advertising/losing your laptop for an hour.
